Image: CIT bus Stop photograph by Martin
This image by Martin has captured my imagination. It is a bit like a blank canvas that we could play with with the student group. If we supply a variety of materials that the students can play with for making there own DIY bus shelters. eg umbrella's , plastic sheeting, wooden poles, corrugated plastic, perspex, chairs. . . anything else sourced . . . they could make interventions in this space that we could then photograph.
I am aware that the path is narrow here and that is probably why there is no permanent bus shelter but I think it could be fun and playful to do this. The images would look great with the students eg holding up plastic sheeting or sitting in make shift spaces.
Students are back today, so if I get a chance I'll pass by there either today or tomorrow at around 16:00, at which time there should be lots of students waiting for the bus.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of giving the students materials to improvise and create bus shelters with.
Chairs would be interesting - their arrangement would leave an implicit 'social trace' of past bus shelter users. In my mind, this would be sort of like the idea of temporary paint or a leaving a plastic pen hanging, except how the chairs are configured would/could communicate something on a more visceral level.
I agree that having the students construct a shelter out of available materials is a good idea. Perhaps after having shown them some of the images you've gathered Seoidin? Just to expand their imagination. Or do you think that they would only influence the outcomes? I find that when people aren't accustomed to thinking laterally on a daily basis they need a nudge to be imaginative.
